New Directions of Instant Noodle Innovation

August 28, 2026

Convenience continues to be a key factor influencing food choices in Indonesia. More consumers are looking for food that is quick and easy to prepare. In fact, 34% of Indonesian consumers choose easy to prepare foods most of the time. This shows a clear preference for convenient meal solutions that fit into their busy lifestyles. The familiarity of instant noodles as a quick hunger solution among Indonesian consumers makes the category a natural fit for this demand for convenience.

As consumer needs continue to evolve, instant noodle brands are looking for new ways to innovate. In Indonesia, instant noodles accounted for 52% of new product launches in the staple and convenience food category in 2025. Growing consumer awareness of health issues is also influencing innovation in this category. Across Asia, brands are increasingly adding nutritional benefits such as vitamins, minerals, and calcium to instant noodle products.

In Indonesia, however, instant noodle innovation is currently focused mainly on reducing certain ingredients, such as sodium and fat. This creates an opportunity for brands to explore new ways to add nutritional benefits to their products while maintaining convenience and competitive pricing.

Although Indonesian consumers are increasingly careful with their spending, they remain eager to explore new flavours in their daily meals. This creates an opportunity for instant noodle brands to offer more flavour combinations. In Indonesia, chicken is the most common flavour for instant noodles and is often paired with onion and curry. Across Asia, beyond animal protein flavours, spicy flavours are also highly favoured. As Indonesian consumers often adopt food trends from other Asian markets, this creates an opportunity for local brands to explore new and bolder flavour combinations.

Beyond flavour, packaging can also enhance convenience and the overall meal experience. In Japan and South Korea, cup and bowl noodles are already common, offering a simple and convenient option for a quick meal. The format is especially relevant for younger consumers and on the go occasions. While packet noodles still dominate the Indonesian market, growing demand for convenient, individual meal solutions could create opportunities for cup and bowl formats to gain further traction.
